about Rose City Gay Freedom Band
In 1990, a handful of people who shared a passion for having fun while making music and sharing it with others decided to found an organization to meet their needs.
This organization, the Rose City Gay Freedom Band (RCGFB), provides an artistic outlet open to all GLBTQ people and supportive friends.
RCGFB has been delighting audiences since 1990, growing over the years and now performing a variety of musical styles ranging from classical pieces to contemporary and popular music. RCGFB produces at least two concerts per year and has performed throughout the Portland area as well as Salem and Seattle. RCGFB has collaborated in concerts with the Portland Gay Men's Chorus, the Portland Lesbian Choir, and the Seattle Rainbow City Band and was a participant in the 2001 and 2007 Oregon Adult Band Festival.
In addition to the original concert band, RCGFB has several other musical groups. Rose City Swing, started in 1993, is a 16-piece "big band" with vocalists. Rose City Swing produces its own dances and is available to perform at community events and private functions. Rose City Swing began as a Dixieland group called The Dixie Rose, which still dusts off to perform now and then upon request. You can catch the marching band in Portland's Pride parade every June.
